Anyone questioning the horrific instances of police shootings in the U.S. (most recently in Dallas when a white police officer shot and killed a black man in his own apartment), must be asking themselves “why?”  Why is law enforcement trigger happy, especially with people of color? Why is law enforcement often dressed in military garb, brandishing military-style weapons, and using excessive force with peaceful protesters?

Mapping police violence in the U.S. provides a startling visual, but the numbers alone are nauseating. The Washington Post’s searchable database shows that as of August 30, 2018, the police have killed 707 people. And the stats clearly demonstrate that U.S. law enforcement has a much higher number of police shootings compared to their peers in other countries.  Much higher. …

Israel Isn’t an “Apartheid State.” It’s Worse Than That.

U.S. Ambassador to Israel Dan Shapiro recently unleashed harsh criticism against Israel’s occupation of Palestinian land, particularly in the West Bank. Speaking at the Institute for National Security Studies conference in Tel Aviv, Shapiro said:

Too much Israel vigilantism in the West Bank goes unchecked… there is a lack of thorough investigations… at time it seems Israel has two standards of adherence to rule of law in the West Bank – one for Israelis and one for Palestinians.

In short, Shapiro calls Israel an Apartheid state. The term Apartheid comes from the International Convention on the Suppression and Punishment of the Crime of Apartheid, ratified by United Nations General Assembly resolution 3068 (XXVIII) of 30 November 1973. From the Convention:

For the purpose of the present Convention, the term “the crime of apartheid”, which shall include similar policies and practices of racial segregation and discrimination as practised in southern Africa, shall apply…

  • Israeli forces continued to target the Palestinian fishermen in the Gaza Strip Sea.
  • 3 fishermen, including 2 brothers, were wounded and then arrested.
  • Their boat was confiscated while another boat sustained damage.
  • Israeli forces conducted 68 incursions into Palestinian communities in the West Bank and 7 similar incursions in Jerusalem.
  • 67 civilians, including 4 children and 7 women, were arrested.
  • 13 of them, including 3 children and 6 women, were arrested in Jerusalem and its suburbs.
