Anyone questioning the horrific instances of police shootings in the U.S. (most recently in Dallas when a white police officer shot and killed a black man in his own apartment), must be asking themselves “why?”  Why is law enforcement trigger happy, especially with people of color? Why is law enforcement often dressed in military garb, brandishing military-style weapons, and using excessive force with peaceful protesters?

Mapping police violence in the U.S. provides a startling visual, but the numbers alone are nauseating. The Washington Post’s searchable database shows that as of August 30, 2018, the police have killed 707 people. Israel Isn’t an “Apartheid State.” It’s Worse Than That.

U.S. Ambassador to Israel Dan Shapiro recently unleashed harsh criticism against Israel’s occupation of Palestinian land, particularly in the West Bank. Speaking at the Institute for National Security Studies conference in Tel Aviv, Shapiro said:

Too much Israel vigilantism in the West Bank goes unchecked… there is a lack of thorough investigations… at time it seems Israel has two standards of adherence to rule of law in the West Bank – one for Israelis and one for Palestinians.

In short, Shapiro calls Israel an Apartheid state. The term Apartheid comes from the International Convention on the Suppression and Punishment of the Crime of Apartheid, ratified by United Nations General Assembly resolution 3068 (XXVIII) of 30 November 1973. From the Convention:

Nick Cave has held a press conference in Israel, in which he explained he ‘decided to play in Israel to stand up to ‘anyone who tries to censor and silence musicians’. According to the NME: ‘The musician explained that his change in attitude came about when Brian Eno asked him to a sign a list called Artists For Palestine three years ago. “On a very intuitive level, [I] did not want to sign it,” he said. “There was something that stunk to me about that list.”

• Israeli forces continued to target the Palestinian fishermen in the Gaza Strip Sea.
• 3 fishermen, including 2 brothers, were wounded and then arrested.
• Their boat was confiscated while another boat sustained damage.

• Israeli forces conducted 68 incursions into Palestinian communities in the West Bank and 7 similar incursions in Jerusalem.
• 67 civilians, including 4 children and 7 women, were arrested.
• 13 of them, including 3 children and 6 women, were arrested in Jerusalem and its suburbs.

Artists slam Israel’s planned occupation of London’s Roundhouse

Roger Waters, Ken Loach, Caryl Churchill and Thurston Moore are among many leading artists calling for London’s celebrated Roundhouse to cancel its involvement with a festival designed to promote Israel as a progressive and liberal destination with a ‘glittering’ capital city.

TLV in LDN is supposedly a celebration of culture, but its director Marc Worth has revealed in an interview that the festival is the dream child of Israel’s diplomatic mission in the UK, and was conceived in response to the growing movement for boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS). BDS seeks to highlight Israel’s systemic violation of Palestinian human, civil and political rights.

BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) — Governor of the southern occupied West Bank district of Hebron Kamel Hamid condemned a recent Israeli army decision to expand municipal powers in Hebron to Israeli settlers that live illegally in the city, reportedly describing the move as “the most dangerous since 1967.”

Hamid told Palestinian Authority-owned radio station Voice of Palestine that the decision would serve to further strengthen Israeli control in Hebron while undermining the PA, in a city where Palestinians already contend with the highest concentration of military checkpoints in the West Bank and are surrounded by hundreds of notoriously aggressive settlers living under the protection of the Israeli army.
